Uyuni Salt DesertBolivia

The world’s biggest salt desert - it's bigger than Puerto Rico! - the Salar de Uyuni is one of the most bizarre places on Earth. Lip-parchingly white ground, searing blue sky, and insanely empty panoramas are just the backdrop. The Salar truly has to be seen to be believed.

The trip in detail

Our first stop is the train cemetery, where we can see the crumbling remains of Bolivia’s 19th-century railway empire slowly being consumed by the desert.

We’ll see lagoons, cave paintings, and rock formations resembling everything from a teapot to a camel, as we traverse the weird expanse of the Salar to Villamar, where we’ll spend the night.

Meals: Lunch and dinner included

Accommodation: Hotel in Villamar

Laguna Roja (Red Lake) is a sight to see, with its changing colours, ‘eternal snows’, and pink flamingos.

Sol de Mañana, with its geysers shooting dozens of metres into the air, boiling mud pools, and ubiquitous sulphur smell, feels like where hell breaks through to the world’s surface, or the beginning of time when the Earth was being formed.

Today we’ll also see a different kind of desert, Siloli, with its red sand and stone trees.

Meals: All meals included

Accommodation: Hotel in Colchani

Our last day in the Salar begins with Incahuasi Island (known as Fish Island), a weird, fuzzy yet spiky outcrop rising improbably out of a sea of white.

Today´s lunch is a special Bolivian experience, apthapi, where food is cooked underground and served on it.

We’ll take some time today to hit up the best spots to take some classic photos of each other in the world’s most weirdly perspective-less setting.

We’ll bid farewell to the Salt Desert with a glass of wine and a front-row seat for a spectacular sunset.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch included

Accommodation: Hotel in Uyuni
