Communications in Myanmar

Myanmar is fascinating, a place that skipped 50 years of technological progress, straight from party lines to wi-fi. Hardly anyone has a landline but mobile phones are ubiquitous (though coverage is patchy outside the big cities) and internet access is widespread.

You may be able to get roaming coverage in Myanmar – this changes fast and you’ll need to ask your operator. If they can’t do it – or if, as someimtes happens, they say they can but it doesn’t work – you can buy a SIM card and top-up phone credit very cheaply within Myanmar. To buy a SIM card, you’ll need a photocopy of your passport photo page and Myanmar visa page, plus one passport-format photo to hand over.

To make calls from Myanmar to another country, dial 00 then the international code for the country you are calling, then the local area code (minus the 0). International calls can cost upwards of $5 a minute – you’re better off using WhatsApp or something similar to stay in touch.

Wi-fi is available in most of our accommodations in Myanmar, even in remote locations, but no matter where you are in Myanmar, it’s often very slow. We recommend taking two weeks off the information superhighway – you’ll be better for the downtime!

Internet access was once restricted within Myanmar but this no longer seems to be the case – you’ll be able to access Facebook, Twitter et al.

We will provide your trip guide’s local Myanmar cellphone number before the trip – this is the easiest way for your loved ones to get in touch with you, should they need to.
